May Days for Praying . . .

“Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.” Psalm 37:3-5

Lent is over and advent is eight months away, yet I feel a call to pray. Here in this space where no holiday stress looms overhead, when daylight lengthens and temperatures mellow, God is asking me to set aside some time to pray.

Psalm 37 reminds us to delight ourselves in the Lord, to commit our ways to Him, to trust in Him. Delighting myself in God might look like God and me sharing afternoon tea. What a delight! Sitting still, teacup in hand, conversing over events of the day, the week, the year. Enjoying a fragrant tea, scones, jam and clotted cream with my closest friend. That would be delighting myself in the Lord.

Committing my way to the Lord might be turning all those wasted moments of scheming, planning, rehearsing words, or searching for the next new “something” over to God and asking His advice instead of taking my own. Committing to someone else is tricky, a releasing of control. Commit your way to the Lord, the psalmist urges. Get off the phone, off social media, off the advice of others and listen to the voice of God.

Trust God. The only thing harder than listening for the voice of God is trusting and following what He tells us! Some answers are given, they are just hard to swallow. Trust in God and He will act. Wouldn’t that make life easier, letting God act? Allowing God, the almighty, omnipotent ruler of the universe to act in our stead, instead of trying to conquer life alone?

I intend to delight myself in the Lord always, but especially for the month of May. Would you commit to praying with me? To spending time alone with God, listening for his voice and trusting whatever He says?

I will not be sharing recipes during May, but perhaps God will give us all some insight that will be even sweeter than the sweetest recipe.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
 In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
